Rebels In New Drive On Madrid

Heavy Bombardment Is Begun As Rebels Try Break Through.

A decisive campaign was under way on the Madrid front last night as rebels began a massed attack on the Spanish capital with a heavy bombardment. Loyalists, however, claim they drove the attacking rebels back in the first assault and captured several of the invaders tanks. Good effect was reported by the exchange of artillery fire while the wintry weather continued to hamper fighting, altho heavy operations went on along the suburbs of the city, with the Loyalists holding their own against the Rebel thrust. The insurgents during the day commenced a long-range bombardment on Madrid, firing intermittently at selected targets. One shell burst near the telephone building and hurled shrapnel thru a newspaper pressroom, coming within three feet of a handful of sleeping editors and reporters. To-day is scheduled for the "decisive battle" and rebel leaders who allow their soldiers to retreat in the battle will be brought before the firing squad and summarily executed, rebel commander General Francisco is said to have stated in orders.
