COMMANDER MERRY TO BE A REAR-ADMIRAL

WILL BE RETIRED ON MARCH 5 Hat Been Forty Years in Service of United States —Is Civil War Veteran— Naval Station New Building Now Ready for Occupancy. According to a special naval regu- , lation by which all United Slates naval officers, who served in the Civil War. are promoted when they are , placed on the retir d list, to a grade . higher than they occupied on the date of retirement. Captain Merry, the commandant of the local naval station, will be made a rear-admiral on March 5. Naval officers are retired when they attain the age of t>2 years and as Captain Merry will have attained that age on March 5. he will have to be placed on the retired list with the additional promotion. The 1 local commandant now holds the grade of captain so this means that h 1 will be placed on the list of rear admirals. He was appointed an ensign on October 15. 1562. The new offices at the naval station are nearly complete and it is ex 1 pected they will be occupied by the end of next week. The office of th-> ] commandant and engineer.
