Old brick mansion houses, built 70 years ago, having thick massive walls so common in those days, were shaken from roof to cellar, rattling doors, windows, and creating general alarm. CHICAGO. November 1. A Tribune's New York special says the heavy break down in gold is now known to be caused by the general belief that Secretary Boutwell is a very few weeks make a grand coup, and at once return to spe@@ payments, thus forestaling the decision of the Supreme Court, which will undoubtedly by that the Legal Tender Act is unconstitutional. The decision is expected about the end of the year. This action of the Secretary will undoubtedly cause temporary distress throughout the country, and create a panic in the produce and general merchandise markets, but as the step has to be taken some time, the present is considered the most convenient po@@@lly – better indeed than any other period not so remote from the Presidential election. Among the numerous financial measure in contemplation by Mr. Boutwell is one to replace the Five-twenty Bonds about due by a large foreign loan. This has often been contradicted but nevertheless is now about agreed upon with the agents of foreign bankers now in this country.
WASHINGTON. November 1. The Special Commitee on the Pacific Railroad submitted their report to Secretary Cox today. The investigations were of the most minute character, all the timbers in the bridges being measured, and the strata on all the iron rods in these structures estimated. The report on the condition of bridges over the @@ line is a very faborable character. A large proportion of both roads is well ballasted; @@@ more numbers than is necessary; cottonwood ties are being replaced by hard pane in many places. The equipments are abundant, and the water stations plenty. The Commissoners express for the opinion that all the officers on both roads are working in good faith to bring the roads into the best possible condition. The late management of the Union Pacific do not receive favorable notice, but the present mangement is said to be conducting its affairs in good faith.
CINCINNATI, Nov.1. The Board of Education, after a long discussion tonight, passed resolutions prohibiting reading the Bible etc., in public schools of the city by a vote of 22 to 15.
NEW YORK. November 2. A special cable despatch states that the cities of Frankford, Weisbaden and Mayence, with the surrounding country were visited by shocks of earthquake on the night of the 31 st @@ and yesterday morning.
BOSTON, November 2. Governor Clatlin is re-elected by a plurality of 10,000 to 15,000. The vote of 167 towns and cities is: For Clatlin, 43,145; Adams, 37,150; Chamerlain, 10,000.
The Legislature is claimed by both Prohibitionists and license men, and probably it is pretty nearly divided on the larger question. The Republicans have a strong majority in both branches.
CINCINNATI, November 2. Judge Stover of the Supreme Court has granted an injunction restraining the Board of Education from carrying into execution their resolution prohibiting the reading of the Bible and religious books and sacred music in the public schools. The ground on which the petitioners prayed for the injunction is that the framers of the Constitution, by declaring that instrument that religion is essential to good government, denied the Board of Education the right to exclude all manner of religious instruction. The case will be heard on Thursday.
NEW YORK, November 3. A special despatch from Paris says it is intimated as the popluar impression accepted in the city that Napoleon will propose a plan for disornament in his speech at the opning of the session of the French Legislature, and that the idea is likely to become general. It is said, indeed, that Lord Clarendon conveyed assurances of England's approval of such a course to his Majesty, and that it will be agreeable to Russia. The tendency of Napoleon's policy is said to be objectively for the embarassment of Prussia.
FRANKFORT-ON-THE-MAIN. Nov. 2. Quite a heavy shock of earthquake was felt last evening thoughout Germany, particularly at Darmstadt. Meshalen [Merxheim?] Mayence and Frankfort.
NEW YORK. November 3. The returns today show that the State has gone Democratic by not over 10,000.
NEWARK, November 3. The Sentate stands 13 Democrats and 8 Republicans; the Assembly 34 Democrats, 36 Republicans. Essex county elects a Republican Senator and county officers by a reduced majority. Newark city gives 309 Democratic majority.
WHEELING. November 3. Full returns from 39 counties show 15 Republicans, 9 Liberal Republicans and 21 Democrats elected to the House of Delegates. There are 11 counties to here from, which the Democrtas estimate will elect three Republicans, four Liberal Republicans, and four Democrats. The Liberals include such Republicans as favor repeating the test oaths and disfranchising measures. The Senate stands 18 Republicans to 4 Democrats. Eight Republicans are regarded as Liberals.
