KOKUA FOR LUNALILO HOME
by Guy Gilliland, Honolulu Hawaiian Jaycees
The first phase of the Honolulu Hawaiian Jaycees' Lunalilo Home Project was completed on November I9th, 1983. A group of 20 Jaycees were on hand to participate in the first part of the project whieh ended with five refinished and painted doors and entrance ways. The Jaycees used materials donated by City Mill to scrape, spackle, sand and paint the doors. Before starting work, the Home's Administrator Mrs. Mariana Klimeneo, welcomed our volunteers and invited everyone to visit with the residents. This invitation gave some of us the ehanee to see the Home and to talk
with the elder residents to whom some of us are related. The project was initiated as the result of a request by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs for kokua. But the project also turned out to serve another purpose. In addition to doing physical repairs around the Home the project provided an opportunity to expose our younger Hawaiian men to the needs and experiences of a group of older Hawaiians. It was really special to see their eyes light up when talking-story about the magic times in their lii'e or proudly boasting about their achievements or someone special they onee knew.
