OHA Scholarships
Applications for graduate level scholarships are now available to native Hawaiians who wish to eam advanced degrees. Applications forms may be picked up at any OHA office of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Trustee Gard Kealoha, chairman of OHA's Culture/Edueahon Committee, said the Board of Trustees appropriated a total of $50,000 in order to encourage native Hawaiians to acquire the skil!s to become future leaders of our state. The scholarships will vary in amount depending on the university . However, it is expected they will average approximately $2,000 a year. Criteria for the graduate scholarship grants were established by a Scholarship Process Development Committee chaired by Claire Hughes-Ho, a Public Health Nutritionist. Other committee members are Mamo Carreira, principal at Lineoln Elementary School; Frank Jahrling, assistant vicepresident of First Hawaiian Bank; and Mary Loek, counselor at Lineoln Elementary School. Four criteria will be considered in a numerical scoring evaluation of scholarship applications: 1. Financial status and need; 2. Anticipated expenses; 3. Academic achievement; and 4. A written composition. Applicants must submit documentation attesting to their native Hawaiian status (50 percent or more Hawaiian blood), and letters of recommendation. Scholarship applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of the Culture/Education chair, the OHA acting administrator, and three members from the community . . . one eaeh from the financial, education, and religious fields. Deadline to submit applications is Monday, July 29, 1985. Awards will be made in time for the September semester.
