Hawaii Nature Center Offers Free Programs
Na Hana Hawaii, Hawaiian activities and programs at the Hawaii Nature Center for the next quarter, have been announced by Coordinator Sonny Ching. All activities take plaee on Saturdays at 9 a.m. at the center, 2131 Makiki Heights Drive, phone 942-0990. The programs and activities are free to the public and children must be age 8 and older. July 5 — An Archeological Expedition, Martha Yent, archeologist with the State Department of Land and Natural Resources. Interesting for the entire family. July 12 — Na Mea Launiu, Sonny Ching will talk about the coconut and the role it played with the Hawaiian people. July 19 — A Geology Hike, Hydrologist/Geologist Glenn Bauer will conduct geological hike along Makiki Loop Trail. July 26 — Hawaiian Art, Imaikalani Kalahele of Queen Lili'uokalani Childrens Center will speak about modern techniques vs. ancient Hawaiian methods in art. Aug. 2 — Nahuina Trail, Thelma Greig is hike leader along this trail not far from the center. Aug. 9 — The Way of the Po'e Kanaka Kahiko (ancient Hawaiian people), Nalani 01ds Napoleonwill song dance her way through history. Aug. 16 — Makiki Loop Trail, Cynthia Krakowski is hike leader on this all time favorite for the entire family. Aug. 23 — Hawaiian Music: In Depth, Hattie Phillips conducts a journey of music. Aug. 30 — Ancient Hawaiian Clothing, Allan Kanoa presents a unique and original subject matter when he expresses the types and significances of different ancient garments and their material. Sept. 6 — The Manoa Cliffs T rail — a botanical expose. Mark Merlin explains the botanical wonders found along this trail. Sept. 13 — Hawaiian Musical Instruments. Dexter Soares shows you the "hows" and "whys" of the different Hawaiian musical instruments he has made by hand. Sept. 20 — An Aloha Week Extravaganza. Join staff, docents, volunteers in marching you along a most uniquely informative hike. Sept. 27 — Lo'i Kalo. John Reppun teaches the technique of taro planting, cultivation, cooking and making poi — perhaps even enjoy tasting the products. Aia no i ke ko a ke au.
