Kenneth Brown Gets Humanitarian Award
Kenneth F. Brown, prominent Honolulu businessman, civic leader and Office of Hawaiian Affairs beneficiary, has been honored by the Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross as the first recipient of Hawaii's Humanitarian of the Year Award. An island formal dinner was held June 27 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Tapa Ballroom and featured some of Hawaii's top entertainers. Also featured was Howard Morrison, one of New Zealand's leading singers. Brown is president of Mauna Lani Resort ine., and a director of Amfac ine., Hawaiian Airlines, the Nature Conservancy, the Tokyu Foundation and many other organizations. He is a former Hawaii state senator and an architect. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the East-West Center and a trustee of the Bishop Museum, vice president and director of the Young People's Support Center for children with terminal illnesses, president and trustee of the Hawaii Maritime Center and co-founder of the Falls of Clyde.
He has been instrumental in reviving cross-cultural relations with other Polynesians, notably the Maoris of New Zealand. The Humanitarian Award has been created for individuals whose selfless efforts and achievements promote the welfare of humanity. Although the award was presented by the American Red Cross, it is not for Red Cross activitics, but rather for service on a broader, community-wide scale. Brown's contributions to the community and his business and professional activities distinguish him as the first honoree to receive this prestigious award. He was educated at Punahou and Hotchkiss Preparatory and in 1941 received a B.A. in Architecture from Princeton, magna eum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. He is married to the former Joan Schaefer and has three children, Laura, Frances and Bernice.
