Encounters in Paradise opens at HAA
"Encounters With Paradise: Views of Hawaii and Its People, 1778-1941," the first major exhibition of paintings and drawings depicting the Hawaiian Islands, will open at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Jan. 23, and continue through March 22. The exhibition will be the most comprehensive examination of art inspired by outside and loeal visions of Hawai'i to date. Work included in the exhibition spans a period of 163 years, beginning with the earliest works
by John Webber, who accompanied Captain Cook on his first voyage to the Hawaiian Islands, and continuing through art created up to the beginning of World War II. Important works of art on temporary loan from England, Denmark, Sweden, France, the Soviet Union, Australia and New Zealand will be highlighted in the exhibition. Visiting curator David Forbes is engaged in the coordination of "Encounters With Paradise" with academy curator of Western art, Jennifer Saville. Honolulu-born Forbes is a recognized expert on 18th-century through modernist art in Hawai'i. Among the 159 images in "Encounters With Paradise" are works by Louis Choris, Tikhanov and Robert Dampier in the early expedition category; Titian Ramsay Peale, Paul Emmert and Joseph Nawai, artists affiliated with missionaries or whalers; D. Howard Hitchcock, Jules Tavernier and Theodore Wores of the Volcano
School; and Isami Doi, Juliet May Fraser, Georgia O Keeffe, Reuben Tam and Madge Tennent of the Hawaii modernist school. The academy plans a series of Hawaii-related activities including festivals, films, a symposium and lectures whieh will take plaee throughout the duration of the exhibition.
