I am pleased to send you my best wishes as you gather in speeial remembrance of historical events that took plaee on this very ground

exactly a hundred years ago today. While I am unable to join you personally, my thoughts are with you on this special day. The events of January 17, 1893 brought forth a sorrowful cessa-

tion of a Kingdom led by a Queen whose eoneem for human life was foremost. The Queen's undaunted love and devotion to her people delivered them from bloodshed as she reluctantly relinquished her quest for a sovereign nation. Life for the people

of Hawai'i was never to be the same again. Throughout the decades the heritage, culture and traditions of the Hawaiian

I people continue to thrive in the hearts and lives of many. Also enduring the passage of time is the quest for sovereignty as the Hawaiian people i continue to seek self-determination [ and the long overdue return of a

revered nation. The Queen's quest has yet to be achieved. The past cannot be changed, but with eaeh new day the pages of history are filled - just as this special day of remembrance will be an important event in the history of beloved Hawai'i.
