KS/BE head gets ʻŌʻō award
Kamehameha Schools president, Dr. Miehael Chun, was awarded the 'O'ō award by the Hawaiian Business/Professional Association at a banquet held last month at the Willows restaurant. The award is given to native Hawaiian business or professional individuals who have excelled at their chosen profession. Prior to his appointment as Kamehameha president in 1988, Chun was vice-president of Park Engineering, a Hawai'i engineering consulting firm. He worked as chief engineer for former Mayor Eileen Anderson's administration from 1981-85 and taught at University of Hawai'i-Mānoa from 1970-81 where he directed graduate instruction and research in environmental engineering.
Chun holds a M.A. and B.A. in civil engineering. He took his doctorate at the University of Kansas, where he received his
degree in environmental health engineering. Three years ago he was named Hawai'i State Engineer by the Hawai'i Society of Professional Engineers. Since 1990, Chun has been a voting member of the Board of Directors for Alexander and Baldwin, ine., and Matson Navigation Co„ ine. In his work at Kamehameha Schools, Chun oversees 3,200 kindergarten through grade 12 students. Kamehameha Schools serves an additional 40,000 native Hawaiians annually through 50 early education and community education programs offered at over 100 sites statewide. The Schools' annual budget is $72.5 million and its staff numbers about 1 ,000.
