Why I resigned and why l'm runninpA?ain I n 1998, nearly 30,000 Hawaiiam elected me to a 4-year term. When the Rice decision eame down, the governor filed a court case to remove all the trustees from office. Rather than allow him to appoint someone to fill my vacan<y for 2years, I decided to resign, and let the people choose. When I was elected, I swore an oath to defend the Hawaiian trusts for 4years. I'm running tofulfill that promise and complete the critical work I started. Rice v. Cavetano / Hawauan Self-determination/ the Akaka Bill As a direct result of the Rice case, anti-Hawaiian forces are moving against Hawaiian entitlements. They have targeted the Hawaiian Homes and Ceded Land trusts, the Kamehameha SchooIs and the private trusts. OHA must eonūnue to oppose any unfair global settlement on the trust, and to resist every effort to diminish our peoples' entitlements. I support the Akaka bill because it's a step in the right direction and its inclusive of all Hawaiians. I recommended amendments to the bill to ensure that Hawaiians elected by Hawaiians will control the process. I went to Washington D.C. to testijy on the bill and to lobby for Congressional and Native American support for it. Meanwhile, I eonlinue to push for other options under international law at the United Nations. OHA did not pay for costs for this work — I did, because I believe it must be done, if we are to achieve justice for Hawaiians.

Fiscal Accountability Planninp \ Since I was elected to OHA, I initiated the hiring of a new investment consultant, and a top notch trust attorney. We have reviewed the peformance of all money 200$ ^ 2^00 \ managers and replaced those who did poorly. We have finally brought OHA into K2i«Sf JTJ eomplianee with its investment policy. We need to create a realistic spending policy A and set fiscal priorities. A complete in-house review of all OHA programs has |ja ^ been undertaken. This work is the foundation for OHA's Master Plan for the new millennium. Kupuna Health With the support of many Kupuna and Hawaiian heallh professionals, I helped to ^ei'elop a Kupuna Health initiative to help our kupuna pay for medication. This initiative needs OHA support. A majority of the trustees voted against the initiative twice — but I won 't $ive up.
