Music scholarship
The Hawai'i Academy of Recoding Arts is now accepting applications for the organization's Bill Murata Memorial Scholarship, whieh is awarded to two individuals in the amount of $2,500 eaeh. The scholarship honors Tropical Music founder Bill Murata, whose mission was to preserve and perpetuate Hawaiian music. Before he died in 1983, Murata produced over 100 records and discovered such loeal acts as the Mākaha Sons of Ni'ihau, Hui 'Ohana and the Lim Family. The scholarship is available to undergraduate (sophomores and up) and graduate students who demonstrate an interest in the area of Hawaiian language, music and poetry. In addition to an essay, music majors must submit a recording of two songs, neither of whieh need to be original compositions, and students focusing on Hawaiian language must submit two original mele, neither of whieh need to be recorded. The award will be presented at the 27th Annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards Ceremony on May 24. Applications must be postmarked by May 1. Application forms are available at the
