BURIAL NOTICE: WAIʻALAE-IKI

NOTICE TO INTERESTED PARTIES IS HEREBY GIVEN that two unmarked burial sites eontaining iwi kūpuna (human skeletal remains), were re-identified by Cultural Surveys Hawai'i, Ine. during the eourse of an arehaeologieal inventory survey related to proposed roek fall mitigation at the Waialae 180' Reservoir (TMK [1] 3-5-020:011) at Wai'alae-iki, Honolulu (Kona) Distriet O'ahu A State Inventory of Historie Properties site number of SIHP 50-80-14-5938 previously (2003) has been assigned to identify a very small eave eontaining the remains

of an estimated five individuals and SIHP 50-80-14-6531 previously (2003) has been assigned to identify a very small eave eontaining the remains of one individual. Following the proeedures of Hawai'i Revised Statutes (HRS) Chapter 6E-43, and Hawai'i Administrative Rules (HAR) Chapter 13-300, the burials are believed to be over 50 years old. An evaluation of ethnieity has been made by the State Historie Preservation Division (SHPD) and the burials are believed to be Native Hawaiian. Baekground researeh indieates that during the Māhele these lands of Wai'alae-iki were awarded to Abner Pākl - as part of LCA 106 1 3, 'Apana 3). Kuleana (maka'āinana Land Commission Awards) in the immediate vieinity inelude LCA 3437B:2 to Kaheana and LCA 6749:3 to Apolehua The applieant for this projeet is The Honolulu Board of Water Supply, and the eontaet person is: Kathryn Fujikami, 630 South Beretania Street, Honolulu, HI 96843 [TEL (808) 748-5744. The O'ahu Island Burial Couneil (OIBC) has jurisdietion in this matter and the proper disposition of these burials and treatment of the burial sites will be determined by the OIBC, in eonsultation with any reeognized lineal and/or eultural deseendants, per the requirements of HAR Chapter 13-300-33. Appropriate treatment of the burial sites shall oeeur in accordanee with H AR Chapter 13-300-38.
