BOT funds Roll Commission; ARM Committee assignment
By Ka Wai Ola Staff The Board of Trustees in July approved more money to allow the Native Hawaiian Roll Commission to complete its statutory obligation to certify a roll of Native Hawaiians eligible to vote in an upcoming eleehon of 'Aha delegates. The eleehon is being spearheaded by the independent group Na'i Aupuni, whieh is working to establish a path for self-determination for Native Hawaiians. Meanwhile, the Board of Trustees voted to remove Trustee Akana as Chairperson of the Committee on Asset Resource Management. The decision was largely based on a recommendation from the board's Ad Hoe Committee on Trustees' Responsibilities, whieh was led by Trustee Peter Apo and created in May to consider options available to the board when Trustees fail in their fiduciary responsibilities, or violate board rules. The other contributing factor to removing Akana as a committee chairperson centered on a number of formal complaints about her overstepping the boundaries of acceptable behavior for an OHA trustee. "We must always act for the good of the organization, without placing OHA under unnecessary risk," said OHA Chairperson Robert K. Lindsey Jr. "The situation required a remedy." Akana remains a member of the committee. ■
