Hawaiian keiki mele contest seeks entries

'Ahahui 'Olelo Hawai'i, an organization of Hawaiian language teachers, is sponsoring a eomposing contest for children's songs. Contest organizers David Eyre and Puakea Nogelmeier said the purpose of the contest is to

generate more children's songs written in Hawaiian especially for the children who speak Hawaiian. sv;Deadline for contest entries on cassette tape is May 31, 1990. Entries may be in either the melodic mele category or the rhythmic mele category. Rules specify that the mele must be in the Hawaiian language (a few English or nonsense words are acceptable), that the mele be at least eight lines long, that there is not a strong!y religious theme, and that the song has not already been recorded or published. The writer of the song judged best in the melody category will receive a Kamaka ukulele. The eomposer of the song judged best in the rhythmic mele will receive an ipu heke (double gourd drum).
