The golden memory of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, Olympic gold medalist, sheriff of Honolulu, Ambassador of Aloha, and the father of modern surfing, was honored on Aug. 24, 1990, the 100th anniversary of his birth. A statue of him was unveiled at Waikiki in the presence of his wife Nadine, his brothers, members of the Kahanamoku family, and hundreds of well-wishers.
