"Makau Rua" exhibit opens

The Council of Hawaiian Artists will hold a free pub!ic exhibit of contemporary art by Hawaiian and Maon artists at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens in Kane'ohe. Titled "Makau Rua," or "double hook," it symbolizes the union of the northernmost and southernmost Polynesian tribes. The show opens July 6 at noon and concludes July 28. Visiting hours are: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Two of the exhibit organizers, Bob Freitas and 'Imaikalani Kalahele, hoped to incorporate the recent "Te Atinga" Maon

art exhibit in "Makau Rua." During the show the eouneil is sponsoring a free public symposium on contemporary Hawaiian and Maori arts at Ho'omaluhia. Hawaiian and Maori artists will be speakers. The purpose of the symposium is to answer the question, "What is the contemporary Hawaiian art movement?" The symposium will begin at noon and continue "until pau."
