Construction training

A pre-apprenticeship construction training program, for whieh OHA provides $250,000 in scholarships, is continuing to accept applications. The Construction Training Center of the Pacific administers the program, whieh trains people to acquire skills in such fields as plumbing, electrical, facility maintenance and carpentry. The program's goal is to teach students basic skills that will give them a competitive edge over others applying for entry-level jobs in the construction industry. OHA's funding created 38 scholarships for Native Hawaiians to attend the training program, the tuition for whieh normally runs about $6,580 per student. So far, the OHA scholarships have allowed 10 Native Hawaiians to enroll in the program. Classes are generally held in the evening and on weekends to accommodate the schedules of people who have other jobs.
