U.S. NAVY RECOGNIZED FOR CULTURAL STEWARDSHIP

The state Senate on March 1 2 presented the U.S. Navy with a Certificate of Recognition for its Hawaiian cultural stewardship and renewable energy initiatives. Sen. Maile Shimabukuro co-sponsored the certificate with Will Espero, chair of the Puhlie Safety, lntergovernmental and Military Affairs Committee, citing the Navy's work maintaining the Halealoha Haleamau Burial Platform and replacing invasive Pickleweed with native Hawaiian plants at 'Āhua Reef. Among other work, the Navy has also hosted makahiki events for the past decade, and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam was recently recognized as the best in the Navy for energy and water efficiency.
