Aerial Bombs Rain Death On Spanish Capital

Rebel bombers, invisible in the inky darkness, Sunday night rained bombs into sections of Madrid. The air raid was one of the most terrifying of the Spanish civil war. Citizens unable to see the deathdealing ships, fled into cellars and huddled in doorways in an attempt to escape the bombs. The defense junta announced that 365 persons were killed by the bombs and 1,571 wounded, many of them seriously. After dropping their high-explo-sive cargo over Madrid, the planes departed and circled over the eastern outskirts of the city. Following the air raid, rebel artillery began a terrific bombardment of the Ventas section. Shells crashed into streets and buildings of the seetion, and it was impossible to determine casualties immediately. The Loyalists replied with artillery fire directed at rebel positions north and south of Madrid.
